The story
Davenport had already made his intentions clear Thursday night. He checked out on the field in the 45-lap Cowboy Classic and collected $5,045, leaving everyone else to spend Friday trying to close the gap. With 82 Late Models crowded into Lucas Oil Speedway, simply reaching Saturday's feature was going to be a fight.
Friday had the feel of a full race night even though the big one was still ahead. Tony Jackson Jr. laid down a 15.962-second lap, then won his heat and earned the pole in the redraw. Jesse Stovall, Brian Shirley, Billy Moyer, Davenport and Devin Moran won the other heats. Moyer owned the night's extra races, beating 10 different chassis representatives in the Manufacturers Dash and then taking the 12-lap Race of Champions over Wendell Wallace and Shannon Babb.
Then the weather took over. Rain interrupted Saturday's program and eventually sent everybody home with the Show-Me 100 unfinished. Seven weeks later, the teams came back to Wheatland on July 12 and Davenport picked up exactly where he had left off. He led all 100 laps, never gave the field a real opening and completed the long-delayed weekend sweep. Scott Bloomquist finished second, Chris Simpson third, Jimmy Owens fourth and Stovall fifth.
Davenport earned $30,000 and became the 11th different Show-Me 100 winner. It was the event's first wire-to-wire victory since Wendell Wallace in 2007, but the larger story was how long Davenport held control. From the Cowboy Classic in May through the final checkered flag in July, the 2015 Show-Me 100 belonged to him.
