The story
The May 23, 1998, event brought 109 cars to West Plains. Dale McDowell set fast time at 15.322 seconds, while Cook and Smith each transferred by winning their heat races.
Cook led the opening 31 laps of the feature. Smith moved ahead on lap 32 and stayed there through lap 100, earning $32,000. Cook held second, with Robbie Starnes third, Billy Moyer fourth and McDowell fifth.
Smith became the fourth different winner in the event’s first six years. The posted feature payouts reached $157,300, with all 24 starters receiving at least $2,500.
